Renewable Resources

Wind: Wind power generates electricity:

  • By converting wind energy into electrical energy
  • Typically through the use of a tower-mounted turbine, which rotates a generator to produce electricity
Wind power is a growing segment of the energy market. Today, the U.S. wind generating capacity stands at approximately 35,000 megawatts, producing enough electricity to power the equivalent of about 9.7 million households. That number is increasing at a rate of a million homes every five months.  (Source: American Wind Energy Association) NextEra Energy Resources provides nearly 25 percent of the wind energy market.

Sun: Solar power involves:

  • Harnessing energy from the sun
  • Converting it to electricity through various means
Renewed interest in and viability of solar power have recently led to steady expansion. The U.S. solar power industry has experienced double-digit rates of growth since 2000, although it is still a small portion of the total U.S. energy mix. (Source: Energy Information Administration) NextEra Energy Resources is the largest generator of solar energy in the country through operations at the Solar Electric Generating System in California's Mojave Desert.

Water: One of the original commercial forms of renewable energy is hydroelectric power, which converts the force of moving water into electricity. NextEra Energy Resources is a leading producer of hydroelectric power in the Northeast, with plants in Maine.
