Hydroelectric - Benefits of Hydroelectric Energy
Working at NextEra Energy Resources' hydroelectric facilities means more than generating electricity. The company is involved in a number of activities that support the environment or relate to recreational uses of the rivers where NextEra Energy Resources' plants are located.
- NextEra Energy Resources is involved in several eagle projects associated with our hydro projects in partnership with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
- NextEra Energy Resources' biologists are involved in work undertaken by a coalition of environmental groups, government agencies, fishing groups and business organizations to save the native trout in Maine’s Rapid River.
- Loon management work has been conducted on NextEra Energy Resources projects since 1985, including the installation of nesting platforms deployed in more than 80 loon nesting territories to monitor and maintain the species.
- Fish “elevators” have been constructed at a number of NextEra Energy Resources' hydroelectric facilities, allowing salmon and other native species of fish to be lifted to reservoirs above the dam to native spawning areas, helping ensure the species’ continued survival.
