Seabrook - License Renewal Frequently Asked Questions
How long can Seabrook operate under its current license?
Seabrook's initial 40-year operating license runs from 1990 to 2030.
Why is Seabrook applying for its license extension now?
License renewal approval at this stage of Seabrook Station's operating life will allow the best possible long-term planning of maintenance activities and expenditure of funds for new equipment and systems. This will ensure that Seabrook remains in top condition until the end of its initial 40-year license period and will be fully ready for an additional 20 years of safe, reliable and emissions-free operation.
When did Seabrook apply for license renewal?
Seabrook submitted its application for license renewal to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in June 2010.
If the license renewal is granted, will Seabrook continue to be safe to operate?
Yes. Seabrook has an outstanding safety record and has been evaluated consistently as such by federal regulators and independent industry groups. Its plant equipment is carefully tested and maintained, and upgraded when necessary. Members of the team are rigorously trained to very high standards of performance. They continually demonstrate the ability to manage all aspects of the plant's operations with the highest safety standards.
What is happening now that the application is submitted?
For more than two years, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will conduct the extensive safety and environmental review of the multi-volume application. An NRC decision on the license renewal application is expected in 2012.
Will the public have an opportunity to comment on the application?
Yes. As part of the process the NRC will conduct public meetings and the public will be notified in advance.
