100 Megawatts of Clean Energy in Catron County, New Mexico
Since 2003, NextEra Energy Resources' subsidiaries have been helping fuel the state’s economic growth and quality of life and moving our country toward energy independence. To date, we have invested more than $977 million in New Mexico, including four operational wind energy centers and three operational solar energy centers.
The Borderlands Wind Energy Center features:
- 34 GE wind turbines capable of generating up to 100 megawatts (MW) of clean, renewable energy.
- Began commercial operation in December 2021.
COMMUNITY BENEFITS
Bringing Economic Opportunities
Wind farms are compatible with agriculture and are fast becoming an important component of farm viability in New Mexico and many areas across the country. They can also generate significant economic benefits for the communities that host them.

Employment Opportunities
The Borderlands Wind Energy Center creates local employment opportunities, including 100 construction jobs and approximately 4-6 good-paying, full-time jobs.

Landowners Payments
The Project provides $18 million in payments to landowners - stable, reliable income families can depend on, regardless of weather.

County Tax Revenue
The Project provides $10 million in additional revenue for Catron County, money that can enhance local roads, schools and services.

Local Spending
Wind farms provide indirect income to local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, caterers and office supply companies.
