For decades, people in the U.S. have been safely living and working around wind turbines. Wind energy is a step towards ensuring that our communities breathe easier and live healthier lives.
In addition to improving air quality and reducing breathing-related illness like asthma, it’s also important to address concerns about wind energy and health.
NextEra Energy Resources sites all its wind projects to protect public health in the communities where we operate.
Are wind turbines noisy?
Modern technological advancements have reduced the noise wind turbines produce. Turbines only run when the wind is blowing. When ground level winds are high the sound of the wind masks most of the turbine sound. Additionally, recent studies from the Ohio Department of Health found no proof that wind turbines cause any health problems.
What about electromagnetic fields?
Electromagnetic fields (EMF), specifically the magnetic portion, surrounds anything generating, transmitting or using electricity. Magnetic fields occur anywhere there is a flow of electricity. There are many sources of EMF in our everyday lives, including the appliances in our homes, such as televisions and microwaves. There has been extensive research by academic institutions, government agencies and medical organizations on the potential health effects of EMF for many years.
A study conducted in Ontario, Canada measured magnetic field exposure near wind turbines, substations, and transmission lines. The study found that the magnetic field levels near wind turbines are lower than the levels encountered in homes, offices, and schools, and much lower than exposure from common household electrical devices.1
The Ohio Department of Health reviewed scientific literature published between 2004 and 2019 and concluded that there is no evidence indicating a public health burden from EMF generated by wind turbines or wind farms.
Economic and health benefits
Wind energy supports our health and boosts our economy. The growth of the wind energy sector creates jobs and stimulates local economies, providing financial stability for many American families. This economic boost, combined with the health benefits of cleaner air, makes wind energy a win-win solution for our nation. By supporting wind energy, we are taking a stand for both our health and our economic prosperity.
