Clean, Renewable Energy

The cost of carbon
NextEra Energy Resources believes the threat to the nation from carbon emissions is not just an environmental threat but an economic threat as well. We are strong advocates of a mandatory, economy-wide carbon fee in the United States. NextEra Energy Resources' portfolio of clean, renewable power sources puts us, our investors and our customers on the right side of a future where those who emit carbon will pay fees to pollute. Companies can avoid paying the carbon fee by not emitting carbon – exactly the behavior we need to encourage.

Renewable energy
More than 7,500 megawatts of wind energy, 360 megawatts of hydroelectric generation and 300 megawatts of solar generation make NextEra Energy Resources the largest generator of clean, renewable energy in North America. We invest in renewable energy because it makes financial sense – but equally important, it pays dividends toward a clean environment.

Largest wind generator in North America
NextEra Energy Resources has invested $10 billion in developing and building wind energy projects. In 2009, our wind power plants were capable of generating enough clean, renewable electricity to power approximately 1.8 million homes.  At the same time, our wind facilities have enabled our customers who have purchased the renewable attributes to reduce 2009 emissions that would have otherwise been released into the atmosphere from other sources of power generation, including  more than 14 million tons of carbon dioxide, more than 33,500 tons of sulfur dioxide and more than 30,800 tons of nitrogen oxides.

Largest solar generator in the world
NextEra Energy Resources' solar thermal fields in California generate enough electricity during peak production to power 230,000 homes, while they offset approximately 3,800 tons of pollutants annually that would have been produced if the electricity had been provided by fossil fuels, such as oil.

Our Maine hydroelectric plants
NextEra Energy Resources is a leading producer of hydroelectric power in Maine. Using the force of moving water, the power plants generate approximately 1.6 million megawatt-hours of power every year. That's enough electricity to power more than 300,000 Maine homes.
